Abstract
Background: For the effective counselling about smoking cessation, knowledge and skill are mandatory. We aimed to confirm whether structured and standardized education program about treating tobacco use can improve the knowledge of healthcare professionals.

Methods: We used the data from standardized lecture program for training healthcare professional. In total, 159 participants completed test comprised of 20 questions from six themes. We provided same questions both before and after the whole program. We compared the age- and sex-adjusted means of test scores before and after the lectures according to the date, type of profession, and themes.

Results: 159 participants were composed of 67 doctors, 18 dentists, 21 Korean medicine doctors, 32 nurses, and 21 pharmacists. The adjusted means of test result rise by 8.8 point (from 69.0 (¡¾14.4) to 77.8 (¡¾8.5); P£¼0.001) after the lectures. The scores were not significantly different among profession in both pre- (P=0.38) and post-lecture (P=0.21). The scores were raised among 69% of participants. The proportion of those who can pass this program varied according to the cut-off point: 92% to the criteria of 70 point, 57% to the criteria of 80 point. The mean scores of all the six themes were significantly increased after the training program (all P£¼0.01).

Conclusion: Standardized training program for health professional improved the knowledge about treating tobacco use among about 70% of participants. These trends did not differ according to the type of profession.
